Emergency lane

How to behave

When stopping on the emergency lane in an emergency, stop where possible in a safe condition away from the carriageway and make sure that the vehicle is visible.

To signal the parked vehicle, during the day use a warning triangle and at night keep your side lights or emergency warning lights on.

If the lights do not work, place the warning triangle in a stable position at least 30 metres from the rear of the vehicle.

Stopping the vehicle in an emergency in conditions of poor visibility and performing any operations such as changing a tyre can lead to serious risks.

In this case park the vehicle as far away as possible from the carriageway and use all means available to signal the position of the vehicle and any persons on foot: switch on the rear fog light and front headlights as well as the emergency warning lights.

On some vehicles these lights are fitted to the boot, which if left open, for example to remove the spare wheel, make it impossible to see them; always remember to close the boot/rear hatch.

All persons carrying out emergency operations on the vehicle must also be as visible as possible, by wearing a fluorescent jacket or bands, as required by the Italian Highway Code; during all operations, watch out for other vehicles approaching on the carriageway, in order to perceive any potential hazards in advance and get out of the way.

When stopping at the roadside in an emergency, particularly in conditions of poor visibility, the occupants of the vehicle should get out and stand as far as possible on the right-hand side away from the carriageway, to avoid any risk of being knocked down by passing vehicles.
